Vancouver Island Is The Place To Live

Posted by pahpoh 2:06 AM, under ,,, | No comments

We had not heard about Vancouver Island before having a lovely couple who lived there, stay with us for a month when we owned a hospitality business. Therefore, when the opportunity came up to go and see it, we jumped at the chance. We booked a day tour to take as much in as possible given our limited time in Vancouver. Picking us up from the hotel the coach delivered us to the ferry at the harbor and as it was a drive in ferry, the coach came too.

We were blessed with a dazzlingly blue sky and cool weather. The ferry started its slow journey across to the island, the swells not very big. The ferry wasn't crowded so it was a very pleasant trip. Privileged to see some of the marine life along side and in the distance including some sea lions as we passed rocks and a headland of the island As well as other forms of sea life, but to this day I have no idea what they were!

Green Travel

Posted by pahpoh 9:58 AM, under ,, | No comments

Offsetting your carbon footprint while traveling can be a difficult feat to manage. But nowadays, as companies and the general public become more and more informed, green travel can become a reality. Here's a quick guide to small things you can do to make your trip less harsh on the environment.

First, utilize public transportation. That big smelly bus that is motoring down Fifth Avenue may look like an awful polluter. But it's actually better to ride on that thing than your very own personal taxi. Until cities like New York and Chicago pass laws to require all taxi cab companies use hybrid vehicles, traveling on buses and trains will leave the least carbon footprint. It's also a great way to meet and watch the locals in action. Buses are fantastic modes of transport for tourists, especially in foreign countries. It is also a great way to get around safely and economically. You also won't get lost as easily as when you rent a rental car!

4 Top Places for African Safari Holidays

South Africa offers you many different opportunities for safari holidays. There are many reserves and national parks which allow you the chance to explore the famous African landscape and come into close contact (or as close as is safe) with wildlife in their natural surroundings. With so many from which to choose, it can be confusing and even overwhelming. If you have only a short time to visit, you might want to consider the following suggestions.

1. Addo Elephant National Park
Some say Addo boasts not the Big Five but the Big Seven. It has, in other words, the lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard, whale and great white shark. This makes Addo both a land and marine adventure playground for those on safari holidays. However, Addo is best known for boasting the largest population of elephants in the world. If you can't see an elephant here, you won't see one anywhere else in South Africa!

Occupational Health and Safety-Stress and Workaholism at Work

Posted by pahpoh 1:02 AM, under ,,,, | No comments

There has been a lot of hullabalorecently about the problems facing Australia in retaining talented workers and the subsequent pressure placed on those remaining behind in the workplace.

The incidence in stress claims is rising and is having an impact on the economy and enterprises in general.
The incidences of people whwork 'day in day out' whin many ways are closet workaholics is increasing. We are told that 1 in 5 Australians are suffering from some sort of mental illness and that 1 in 7 teenager's at high-school suffer from depression. This comes from proven research but my guess is that it is probably higher, after all these subjects are still quite taboin our society.

Saint Martin/Sint Maarten, an Island Divided

The Caribbean island of Saint Martin/Sint Maarten is the smallest island in the world shared by twcountries. Present day Saint Martin is a peaceful tropic island vacation paradise. In the course of its long and often violent past, this was not always the case. At the origins of its known history, the island was first inhabited by the Arawak people around 800-900 AD. They farmed, made pottery and lived a generally peaceful life on the island of Sualouiga (salty land) until the arrival of the Caribs.

The Caribs preferred fighting tfarming. They feasted on the men and took the women for wives. It"s hard timagine how awful it must feel tbe forced tmarry someone whate your former husband. The word cannibal came from the way the Spaniards said the Arawak word for Carib. The Carib people conquered many islands in that region, hence the name Caribbean.

The History of Hawaii

Posted by pahpoh 2:27 AM, under ,,, | No comments

Hawaii's long history began when the islands were first settled, by Polynesians originating either from the Marquesas Islands or from Tahiti, traveling by canoe. These settlers brought with them pigs, dogs, chicken, coconut, sugarcane, bananas, coconut, and taro, each of which would profoundly impact the landscape and lifestyle in Hawaii for centuries to come.

Captain James Cook discovered Hawaii in 1778 as he was trying to find the elusive Northwest Passage, a water route that would connect the Pacific and Atlantic oceans through North America. He named the chain the Sandwich Islands; news of his discovery prompted other Europeans and Americans to travel to the area, settling throughout the islands during the 1790s and 1800s.

How To Apply For a Passport at the Post Office

Posted by pahpoh 2:17 AM, under ,, | No comments

Want to apply for a passport at a post office? The first step is to discover if the nearest post office has been designated by the Department of State to accept passport applications. While there are more than 36,000 post offices in the United States, there are only 9,400 or so passport application acceptance facilities. Since some of these are public libraries and county clerk's offices, only about 25% of the all post offices can accept application forms. Contact the post offices nearest to your residence until you locate one that has a passport agent. Once you have done this, follow the follow step to apply for your travel document.

Complete Form DS-11
This form is used by first-time applicants, minors and adults whose most recent passport was issued to them when they were minors. The application can be used to apply for a passport book, passport card or both. It is important that you not sign the application. This must be done in the presence of an authorized agent.

Gather Supporting Documents
Applicants who submit Form DS-11, must also submit evidence of United States citizenship, proof of identity and a photocopy of the identification document. Most frequently submitted documents include a birth certificate and valid driver's license although other options are available. Parents of minors must provide proof of relationship to their children.

Take a Passport Photo
Only one photo is now required. The size must be 2x2 inches. The picture must be in color with a white or off-white background. Of course, it must be recent and have a full face view. Problems with passports photos are major causes of delays in the processing of applications.

Visit Post Office
Take the completed but unsigned application form, supporting documents and the photo to the nearest post office that accepts applications. Present them to the attending agent. The agent will review the form and documents as well as witness as you sign the application.

Pay the Passport Fees
There is an execution fee of $25 that is paid to the acceptance facility. The application fee for a passport book is $110 for an adult and $80 for a minor age 15 or under. The application fee for a passport card is $30 for an adult and $15 for a minor. Applicants can request expedited service for an additional $60.

Mail the Packet
Mail the sealed packet to the address on the application form. Applicants are encouraged to use a protective packing such as a Tyvek envelope and send the packet using a traceable delivery method. Those who want their new passport sent by overnight delivery should include another $12.72 in the payment.

Routine processing is taking 4-6 weeks and expedited service is taking 2-3 weeks at the time of writing. Processing times can change due to many different variables. It is important to verify these before mailing your application to make sure you receive your passport before your next scheduled trip abroad.

How Much Does A Bus Pass Cost

Posted by pahpoh 10:15 AM, under ,, | No comments

Bus pass by definition, is the ticket that you need to present in order to avail a public transport service. This ticket may come in a piece of paper or a reloadable plastic card with magnetic strip. Bus passes may come in different types. A regular pass is the one that you pay for a one way trip, day pass gives you unlimited rides anywhere for one day, and weekly pass allows you to ride any bus of the bus company for one week, monthly pass (one month unlimited rides) and annual pass (one year unlimited rides). These bus pass plans are actually advantageous to passengers who follow the same tract everyday like students and office workers.

The cost of bus passes actually differs on the plan that you are availing and the city in which you are availing this public transportation service. Basically, the longer time period of unlimited rides the more expensive it is and the more prosperous and higher the cost of living, the higher is also its price; these two are directly proportional to the cost of the bus pass.

How To Lighten the Load When Travelling

Posted by pahpoh 2:14 AM, under ,, | No comments

Travelling is fun. We all love to get away to visit loved ones, explore a new city, or to go on holiday. The build up to a trip can be enjoyable too the anticipation the planning what we're going to do the packing. Wait 'the packing'? Yes, this can be fun deciding what to take getting ready. It can also be a chore. How often do you pack for a trip and realise that you are about to take half the contents of your house half-way across the world just in case (literally just in (the suit) case)? Wouldn't it be simpler if you just took what you needed if you could fit everything into one bag if you could travel light?

"Hang on a minute" I hear you cry but I need to take all those  items. Do you? That is my question and challenge to you do you really need to take all of those items in your luggage what would happen if you didn't?

You especially want these deals if you have a family. Amazingly, if you're living in the U.S. it's often cheaper to go to Costa Rica than to just go on vacation inside the U.S.

You'll find that many package deals will have cruises that go to different ports in Costa Rica. Or, you could just book a flight from any major United States airport to fly into Liberia or San Jose, two of Costa Rica's biggest cities. Look online to find your low air fares and what it'll take to get to this country.

Europe Bus Tours

Posted by pahpoh 1:40 AM, under ,,, | No comments

European buses tend to be a favorite way to travel for those budget travelers like students and backpackers. But there is another great option that Europe's buses have to offer. Buses offer a great way to tour the city or visit the country side. The Double Decker open air buses are the best ways to see cities like Amsterdam or London to name a couple. Then there is the other side of the bus spectrum like the luxury buses that allow to visit things like the fjords in Norway or the Scottish Highlands in... well I think you know where these travel.

Norway can be one of the most beautiful places to take a Europe bus tour. Most of these tours offer the combination of bus and boat, this is the best option. If taking a tour in Norway the best place to start is in the countries capital Oslo. If you just want to see the city you can get on a Double Decker and do a hop on hop off tour. The best way to visit Norway is to take a full day grand tour that involves a luxury bus and a boat ride which allows you to see the fjords and the one of a kind coast line from two different perspectives.

Akhenaten and The God Aten

Posted by pahpoh 2:04 AM, under ,,,, | No comments

Amenhotep IV took on the name of Akhenaten (meaning servant of the Aten) early in his reign and started a revolutionary period in Egypt history. He moved the seat of government to a new capital in Akhetaten (now known as Amana) - this period was called The Amarna Interlude and it was short lived. He elevated Aten the god of the sun to the only God in the Egyptian religion. This heresy was to bring down Akhenaten and possibly his son King Tutankamen as the religion of Amun Ra was reinstated after his death and almost immediately during the reign of his son.

As a young prince, the 2nd son of Amenhotep III by his chief wife, Tiy, there is some controversy as to whether he shared co-regency with his father. His elder brother Tuthmosis, had died prematurely. The beginning Akhenaten's reign showed no change from that of his predecessors. He was crowned at Karnak (temple of the god Amun) and like his father, married a lady of non-royal blood, Nefertiti, the daughter of the vizier Ay.

Grand Teton National Park-The Gem Of The West

Posted by pahpoh 1:33 AM, under ,, | No comments

Most people don't know this, but the Jackson Hole Airport is the only airport located inside a national park with regular airline service! I have flown there many times over the last 25 years and have enjoyed every landing, every scene and every activity.

Grand Teton National Park is located about 4 miles north of the town of Jackson, Wyoming. If the pioneers of the 1850's had seen this area first they may never have made Oregon or Salt Lake City.

The Grand Teton towers above all mountain peaks in the area. It reaches an altitude of 13,780' above sea level and is known as the "youngest" mountain in the Rockies. Rising over a vertical mile from the valley floor and standing as sentinel beside the famous Snake River, this area is home to "America's Serengeti."

Very few areas in North America are more environmentally protected with 97% of all land area in Teton County being under either federal control or under the control of private conservation organizations.

While you may be inclined to splurge while vacationing, you may be strapped for cash and at a loss for how to fit a fun family trip into a tight budget. The good news is you can still have an exciting vacation without breaking the bank.

What Is a Gap Year ?

Posted by pahpoh 11:48 AM, under ,, | No comments

Once upon a time, the gap year was regarded by some as being just an excuse used by students to avoid getting on with their studies or getting out into the real world and making a contribution. That was, of course, very unfair and inaccurate (well, for most students anyway).

This extended break can be taken at just about any time in life - and it is no longer restricted simply to students. People from all walks of life are increasingly questioning whether or not they would benefit from an extended break in their normal routines. Such breaks may be extremely beneficial, simply in terms of recharging those emotional and intellectual batteries that can so easily become drained by the stresses and strains of repetitive modern life.

DEFINITION
An obelisk "from the Greek word means nail, pointed pillar" is a tall, narrow, four-sided, tapering monument which ends in a pyramid-like shape at the top, said to resemble a 'petrified ray' of the sun-disk. A pair of obelisks usually stood in front of a pylon which is the facade at the front of the temples. Ancient obelisks were mostly monolithic - one solid piece of pink granite mainly from Aswan.
