With eyes closed and his fingers gently playing the guitar strings Santana called out: “Jakarta, Who are you? You are light and love…” 8.000 spectators replied with a huge roar, shouting: “Light and love..Light and love”. Wearing his distinctive panama hat and signature moustache, Santana hypnotized the crowd at the 7th Edition of AXIS Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival on its first evening on March 4th 2011. Black Magic Woman, Corazon Espinado and Oye Como Va were some of the classic numbers well known by old school Santana fans, while Maria-Maria and Smooth were favoured by younger generations among the Latin guitarist’s audience.

The event successfully drew thousands of Jazz and music enthusiasts from all around the country as well as from abroad. Approximately 40 international musicians and1,500 national musicians took part in this annual festival.

Some of the prominent names that decorated the list on the first day included: Ron King Big Band, Michael Paulo, Jeff Lorber, Brian Simpson, Acoustic Alchemy and Dira Sugandi. From Indonesia: Tompi, Marscell,Berry Likumahuawa, Dwiki Dharmawan, Panji , Glen Fredly and the reunion of The Groove highlighted the Indonesian musicians’ line up. As finale for the first evening, Corinne Baily Rae gave a splendid performance for thousands enthusiastic teenagers.
Earlier in the morning, before the festival commenced, several artists took part in the “We Go Green” activities, in concerted effort to improve the planet. Bob James, George Duke, Ron King, Fourplay, Brian Culbertson, Sandhy Sondoro, Bonita, and Tantowi Yahya, were willing to dig the soil and plant trees together with Jakarta’s Governor Fauzi Bowo.
Enthusiasm rose, as crowds grew larger when the festival came to its second night on Saturday March 5th. Diane Warren and Toni Braxton highlighted the evening with their smooth and pristine voices, while Santana returned on stage for the 2nd time during the festival. Performing with Due Voci, Dianne Warren sang on the first and last song of their performance. Later, Toni Braxton stole the spotlight with her dazzling performance. With her eye catching costume and exotic dance moves, Toni cast spells on everyone in the crowd as she sang some of her hits including: You are My Everything, Let It Go, We Meet Again, Will You Marry Me, and topped it with her evergreen love song Unbreak My Heart.
Other performers of the 2nd evening included: Alexandra Sherling, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Aksyan Sjuman & The Committee of Fest, Andre Hehanussa, Andi Rif, Lee Ritenour, George Duke, Sax Divas, Sandhy Sandoro, Monita Tahalea, Maliq and D Essentials, and many more.
George Benson, one of Jazz' legends from United States appeared on the final night of the festival, Sunday March 6th. The man who started his career at the age of 21 as jazz guitarist, completely dazzled the audience when his fingers danced around the guitar frets. Benson, who, the previous evening played a Tribute to Nat King Cole, seemed to know exactly what the Indonesian audience wanted as he played Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You, Greatest Love of All and Give Me The Night.
At the age of 67, the experienced guitarist could still make the audience raise their hats and clap in sheer amazement. “Indonesian audiences are romantic, and Indonesia is such a romantic place” said the holder of the triple platinum and Grammy award winning album “Breezin”. “Jakarta loves my music and I really enjoy my performance tonight. I love it when you like all the romantic songs I wrote” he closed his statement as the grand festival came to an end.
Today Java Jazz has become one of the greatest musical events of the world. Combining more than a thousand artists, the event dazzled with the presence of so many talents and so many unique sounds of the world. As the festival successfully held its 7th edition of its annual celebration, it proves again that Indonesia is and will always be a perfect venue for world class performances.
