Lombok island located in West Nusa Tenggara is almost head-to-head with its neighbour island, Bali, in competition of attracting foreign and domestic tourists. Lombok can be categorized as one of the compelete tourist destinations with its fantastic natural resources starting from Mount Rinjani to exotic and rarely visited beaches including Kuta beach, Aan Cape, as well as the attractive small islets (known as gili).

Bali Nyepi (Day of Silence, Balinese New Year) and Ogoh-ogoh

The world is a global place and with varied interests and beliefs. Some of us party on December 31st in full throttle to bring in the New Year while others celebrate in silence. The Balinese New Year is called Nyepi, which is a day of silence. This custom is regarded by all citizens of the island nation to bring in the New Year. The calendar systems used by the Balinese for religious purposes is indeed much different from the Gregorian calendar used worldwide.

There are two calendar systems followed by the Balinese, Pawukon and Sasih. In Pawukon it begins from Sinta and ends at Watugunung, it has ritual calendar markings of two hundred and ten days, which many historians say is a culture of the Java locals brought to Bali in the early fourteenth century. This is a concept based on numerology which allows for performing of rituals and ceremonies in the island nation of Bali. In the case of Sasih, it is a little similar to that of the Indian culture with twelve months following the lunar cycle, starting at the vernal equinox and is a time when the deities are worshipped with high respect.

Bali Galungan Kuningan Celebrations

Galungan and Kuningan stand for celebrating the earth. It is on this very day when the Hindu devotees offer their gratitude to the creators for all their earthly possessions and for his blessings and love as well.

It begins with "Wrespathi Wage Sungsang". Legend says this is when the ancestors come to meet humans on earth along with the Gods. Flowers are offered on the family altar in each house to mark the occasion. Following this we have "Sukra Keliwon Sungsang", a day when purification of the human body, mind and soul happens through prayers and holy words. The next day we celebrate "Saniscara Umanis Sungsang", a day when mental patience and peace is tested as an act of faith and devotion.

Indonesia Travel "I LA GALIGO COMES “HOME”: PERFORMS IN MAKASSAR"

Having been performed before raving audiences around the world, the “ I La Galigo” theatre will finally appear in its original home in Makassar, South Sulawesi at the historic Fort Rotterdam on 23 to 24 April 2011.

The drama is derived from I La Galigo, the longest epic poem in the world. Written in poetic verse on lontar leaves in the ancient Bugis language of South Sulawesi between the 13th and 15th century, the original I La Galigo  has 300,000 lines and 6,000 pages. It is believed that this voluminous literary work should be even thicker since many sections have already disappeared. La Galigo is therefore longer than Homer’s classic Iliad and the Odyssey, which consist of 16,000 lines, and the Mahabharata of India, which consists of 150,000 to 200,000 lines.

With eyes closed and his fingers gently playing the guitar strings Santana called out: “Jakarta, Who are you? You are light and love…” 8.000 spectators replied with a huge roar, shouting:  “Light and love..Light and love”.  Wearing his distinctive panama hat and signature moustache, Santana hypnotized the crowd at the 7th Edition of AXIS Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival on its first evening on March 4th 2011. Black Magic Woman, Corazon Espinado and Oye Como Va were some of the classic numbers well known by old school Santana fans, while Maria-Maria and Smooth were favoured by younger generations among the Latin guitarist’s audience. 

Santana was one of the awaited stars featured in the massive celebration of Jazz held at the Jakarta International Exhibition Center (JIExpo) on 4 to 6 March 2011. The event successfully drew thousands of Jazz and music enthusiasts from all around the country as well as from abroad. Approximately 40 international musicians and1,500 national musicians took part in this annual festival.

Indonesia Travel "CNN Recommends KOMODO seas Among Asia's '10 Most Spectacular Dive Sites'"

In a recent article of 17 February on CNN Go, CNN selected the Komodo seas in Indonesia’s East Nusatenggara province amongst ten of “Asia Stunning Underwater Sites”. Besides Komodo, CNN also recommended three other Indonesia dive sites, these are the Derawan Islands in East Kalimantan, Raja Ampat in West Papua, and Tulamben in Bali, as among Asia’s “10 most spectacular dive sites”.

The Komodo seas within the Komodo National Park, is habitat to a variety of surfish, mantas, dolphins, eagle rays, pygmy seahorses, ornate ghost pipefish, blue-ringed octopus, “making this one of the most diverse and vibrant dive spots on the planet”, vouches CNN. 

Indonesia Travel "Rob Rambini Proudly Welcomed in Bali After Sailding Solo fro California"

After sailing solo for over 10,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean, Rob ”Rama” Rambini  finally arrived at the Balima Pier,Tanjung Benoa Port, Bali at 01.30 am. Western Indonesia Time on Saturday, April 2nd 2011. The Italian born Indonesian citizen began this long voyage from Oakland, California, United States of America on May 8th  2010. The journey, which took 10 months and 27 days, landed Rob in the pages of the Indonesian Museum of Records (MURI) as the first Indonesian ever to sail solo from California to Bali.  

The MURI certificate of recognition no. 4810/R.MURI/IV/2011 was handed by MURI representative attended by DR. Sapta Nirwandar,  Director General for Tourism Marketing of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia at the Serambi Mariana, Tanjung Benoa Port, Bali.
