Mumbai- The City Never Sleep

Mumbai, also known as Aamchi Mumbai, earlier known as Bombay is the fifth most populous and bustling city in India. Mumbai is the alluring city with a splash of artistic decor, outstanding temples, high-rise buildings, hip and happening crowd, and fun and frolic arenas one wish to dive into. The city is the Page 3 hub where all the wannabes flaunt their way to glory.

History:
Mumbai was ruled by successive dynasties Satavahanas, Abhiras, Vakatakas, Kalachuris, Konkan Mauryas, Chalukyas and Rashtrakutas, before being ruled by Silharas from 810 to 1260. The city got its name Mumbai in 1996.

Topography and Weather: Mumbai is bifurcated into two main regions: Mumbai City district also known as island city or south Mumbai and Mumbai Suburban district. Mumbai is bounded by Arabian Sea to the west and large chunks of this city lie above sea level. Mumbai experiences a tropical climate where winter rules from December to February, summer from March to June and monsoon prevails between June and September.

Culture: The city offers a diversified culture and cosmopolitan lifestyle. Mumbai is the cradle for Indian cinema and is rich in theatre activities performing in different languages ranging from Marathi, Hindi, English and other regional languages. The architecture of the city is gothic.
Cricket is the most popular sport played and two renowned stadiums namely Wankhede Stadium and the Brabourne Stadium where the international cricket matches are been held. Football and Derby are widely followed by the fans in Mumbai.

Mumbai known for its extraordinary cuisines are known for their lip smacking delicacies. Bombil Batata Bhaji, Kamag Kakri, Solachi Kadhi are the well known delicacies. The mouth watering snacks are Vada Pav, Pani Puri are the most wanted snacks among the food buffs and many other delicacies are found in the Khau Galii which is food mongers paradise.

Not to forget the night life of Mumbai which truly suits the nocturnal Mumbaikars where no one goes home unhappy, as this entertaining city captivates everyone's heart, mind and soul.

Khandala, Lonavala, Karla, Matheran, Malsej Ghat, Igatpuri, Bhandardhara, Mahabaleshwar, and Panchgani are the famous hill stations. Khandala and Lonavala are the most popular hill stations and are famous for the hiking and trekking activities and are also known for its waterfalls, dams, splendid scenic beauty and pleasant weather. Karla is located 12 kms away from Lonavala and known for its caves and the Buddhist temples. Alibagh, Gorai, Kashid, Murud Janjira, Dahanu, Bordi, Daman, Shrivardhan, Harnia, Ajanvel are the most renowned beaches. Juhu and Marine drive Chowpatty beaches are the must see.

  • Air: Chatrapati Shivaji international airport caters to both domestic as well as international destinations. Mumbai airport is known for the bustling activities and is the busiest air terminal in the country as it is the central hub for most of the international connecting flights.
  • Rail: Mumbai railways are known for their stupendous reputation serving two major zones: Central Railways with their headquarters at Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus and Western Railway with their headquarters at Church gate. The Suburban Railways are the savior for the Mumbaikars which has a passenger carrying capacity more than the half of the Indian railways daily carrying capacity. Mumbai Metro is also a boon for the fast paced people.
  • Bus: National highways 3, 4 and 8 serve the city of Mumbai. Bus fleet consists of single-decker, double-decker, vestibule, low-floor, air-conditioned and Euro III compliant Compressed Natural Gas powered buses. Volvo buses are operated by Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) and Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT).To avoid the traffic congestion, skywalks have been introduced for quick and safe pedestrian movement.
  • Sea: Mumbai lies in the coastal region and has a well connected port. The two major ports are Mumbai Port Trust and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust.
